Pensions on divorce
Why the pension matters

Why the pension matters more than people think.

In a divorce, attention goes to what you can see. The house. The savings. Who keeps what.

The pension is harder to picture, so it gets traded away or overlooked. That can cost one partner hundreds of thousands, usually the one who didn't manage them.

A pension can be worth as much as the family home. It needs valuing properly.

Three ways a pension can be divided.

There's no single right answer. There's a right answer for your situation.

Pensions can be dealt with in three main ways in a divorce. Each has advantages depending on your circumstances, your age, and what you want your future to look like. We'll help you understand which fits.

Pension sharing

A pension sharing order splits a pension into two, giving each person their own pot. A clean break, with each of you in control of your own future. One of the most common approaches.

Pension offsetting

One person keeps the pension, the other takes a larger share of other assets, like the house. Simple and immediate, but only fair if the pension is valued correctly first.

Pension attachment

One person receives a share of the other's pension income in future. It keeps a financial link between you and depends on when benefits are taken. Less common today.

A fair split starts with an honest number

A fair split starts with an honest number.

Before any decision, you need to know what the pensions are worth. That starts with a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value: the figure the scheme puts on it.

That figure isn't always the full story. Defined benefit pensions can be worth more than it suggests.

Get this wrong and the settlement can't easily be undone. We work with your solicitor so the valuation reflects reality.
